Chicks galore!
So far, Monstrous Regiment has completely surprised me. I had no idea that all of the new recruits were going to turn out to be female and that each would have his/her own personal reason for joining. Right now I am having a difficult time knowing whom to trust. Jackrum seems pretty fishy to me. Why does he keep getting discharged but is then allowed to re-enlist?
Also, is anyone else having issues with the fact that each charcter has a real name, alst name, and nick name? I can't keep them strait to save my life! Except for Maladict, of course.

I completely agree. I was so not expecting all the recruits to be girls. I think Jackrum knows that they're girls. Why else wouldn't he let Polly shave Blouse? Blouse is kind of annoying though. He's just so clueless.

About the names --- this seems to me to just be another case of identity and the idea of what's in a name. Nobody better take that topic for the paper!!! But seriously, from what I've gotten through so far, I think Amy has a good point. I've seen people in real life through my volunteer work at the VA that, because of their military service, cannot live in the real world. Maybe that's what has happened.
Do you think there's a point to them all having four names though? It's really confusing because Pratchett uses ALL of them at one time or amother during the story and it's hard to keep up.
