American Gods
Okay, so I just started reading this today and I'm only in like Chapter 3 or 4 but I already like this book a lot. Was anyone else just really weirded out when that lady swallowed the guy while they were having sex? Completely unexpected. I just thought it was weird that she wanted him to worship her, but who would expect her to swallow him that way. But those are just my thoughts after a few chapters.

Those weirder elements related to sex are not all odd if you think about it. It's just some of our stranger desires being carried to the extreme. Wanting to be worshipped by your lover is not too much of a stretch from things we normally do, wanting to be complimented and told we are loved for example. Even eating a lover is not beyond belief if you consider some of our expressions: sweetie, pumpkin, sugar, etc. Take for instance the expression, "You're so cute, I could eat you up!" It has been theorized these oddities come from a desire to be totally united with another person by absorbing them. Think for instance of Genesis, "and the two shall become one flesh." Taken literally, that verse would have to mean canabalizing your lover, since by eating them their flesh would be used to build your own. Something to think about whenever you hear someone say they believe the Bible literally. Food for thought, if you'll pardon the pun.
