Possible paper topic

I have changed my mind several times over the last week regarding my choice of paper topic. However, this one just jumped into my head and sounds reasonable. I would like to write about the reasons for conflict in the stories we have read. The conflict in American Gods is caused by the gods thinking there is not enough belief to go around. Monstrous Regiment's war is caused by the pride of a nation. Do you have any suggestions from a story in one of the Kelly Link collections that I could use?

I wouldn't thing it necessary for you to get one from Link...keep that in mind before you spend too much time trying to dig out something that may or may not be there.

Can't forget the Witch's Revenge from "Catskin." There's the conflict with the girl's parents, mainly her mother, in "Water Off a Black Dog's Back." "Flying Lessons" has a conflict between most of the main character's and the divorcee/Hera. Alan and Laavie are in conflict in "The Great Divorce." Henry's wife and boss cause a conflict over how he spends his time. Charley and Batu cause an internal conflict within Eric.

Barbara, when you say "conflict" in this context, I think you mean "war" -- and there's certainly a war going on in at least one Kelly Link story, "Stone Animals." Simply saying "conflict" is too broad, because every fictional plot is built on conflict of some kind, usually multiple conflicts. But both American Gods and Monstrous Regiment are, among many other things, war novels, and maybe that's what you're really interested in writing about.
