I think the reason he has so many names and we never find out his real name is because he is a different person to everyone and never himself. He is 'junior' to his dad, 'sweetheart' to his mom, 'Art' to his old friends, 'Will' to Carly, etc. Everyone has imposed upon him what they want and need him to be. It also adds to the lonely feeling that begins the story.
